From the previous thread:
Some of my favorite fantasy authors include:
Piers Anthony (Incarnations of Immortality series)
Terry Brooks (Shannara series)
Jim Butcher (Codex Alera series)
David Eddings
Terry Goodkind (Sword of Truth series)
Robin Hobb (Farseer series)
Mercedes Lackey (Valdemar series)
George R. R. Martin (Song of Fire and Ice series)
Anne McCaffrey (Pern series)
Elizabeth Moon (Paksenarrion & Legacy of Gird series)
Patrick Rothfuss (Kingkiller series)
I'm not much of a sci-fi fan, but I'd recommend Ender's Game by Orson Scott Card.

I've always enjoyed Robert Silverberg probably most reknown for his Lord Valentine's Castle. I've been reading him since I was a preteen when I started reading him according to amazon he has written or edited at least 141 different books more than likely I have about half of them

Russell Hoban's Ridley Walker is a great book. He created this incredible post-apocalyptic version of England even to the point of writing the book in a crude derivation of English that the language devolves into over several centuries (like what Burgess did in Clockwork Orange). It has everything from feral animals to Punch and Judy.
For more classic fantasy, Mercedes Lackey and James Mallory co-authored the Obsidian Trilogy. I still tease my brother-in-law about the 'Unicorn books,' but the teasing is usually followed by 'so. . . mind if I borrow them for a re-read?'
If you don't mind something with a little grit and violence, Peter Brett's Warded Man is one of the most original books I've read in quite some time... and if you don't mind a LOT of grit and violence, Brent Weeks' Night Angel Trilogy is excellent (though designed to be shocking and even offensive in the opening few chapters in particular).
If you like short stories, grab the complete works of Edgar Allen Poe. You don't have to wear black eye-liner, be a manic depressive, or spend your days in angst to read Poe. Two or three of his stories and his tragic life lent him that reputation. Stories like 'Never bet the devil your head' are HILARIOUS and you do yourself a dis-service if you write him off because of the unfortunate reputation. I think I got my copy for 15 bucks or so 10 years ago.
Lastley, it seems like a horribly snobby thing to say, but seriously. Check out The Tempest by Shakespeare. It's pretty much the complete package (and it's not very long, either).

Any of the WoW books have always been good to me. When I was a kid it was the Goosebumps series and My Teacher is an Alien series (still love that ). Now-a-days anything by Stephen King.

Roger Zelazny (especially his Amber Series starting with "Nine Princes in Amber")
he also does sci fi and "Lord of Light" (shared the hugo/nebula with "Dune") is quite simply awesome. "Creatures of Light and Darkness" is another one. He had a unique ability to weave mythos of different kinds into all of his stories.
Steven Brust (the vlad taltos series)

Favorite Books/Authors .... I have a lot.
Fantasy:
Piers Anthony
-Xanth (omg-how-many-books-are-in-this-ology?!)
- Incantations of Immortality
- Adept series
Elizabeth Moon
- Legend of Paksennarion
Terry Brooks
- Shanarra
Margaret Weiss & Tracy Hickman
- Various
David Eddings
- Belgariad, Mallorean, Tamuli, Elenium
R. A. Salvatore
- Just about everything he's written
Dragonlance
- Various
Ravenloft
- Knight of the Black Rose - Tells the adventures of Lord Soth (from Dragonlance), and his adventures
Forgotten Realms
- The Avatar Series
Fantasy that I have a love/hate relationship with:
George R. R. Martin
- Song of Ice and Fire (too much time between books!)
Robert Jordan
- Loved the first few, then disinterest set in, I might pick up the series again
Sci-Fi:
Orson Scott Card
- Enders Game (tried reading the others, didn't get into them much)
Warhammer 40k books
- Varios books from that setting
Mystery
CSI novels
There's a few hundred more I could easily recommend... I'd have to go through my Sony Reader's collections to list absolutely everything. (-:

Delph, I just finished the Soldier's Son series by Robin Hobb and was a little disappointed with the third book. Do you know how the Farseer series compares?
I also just started the Song of Fire and Ice Series by George R. R. Marthin this past weekend on the recommendation of a friend. Only on Chapter 2, but showing promise so far.
Wheel of Time is a big favorite of mine. I'm slowly making my way through the books on tape during my travels for work to refresh my memory for the upcoming release of the final book.
I also enjoyed the Orson Scott Card Enders Game and Seventh Son Series (although if memory serves me, the quality of those series decreased with time).
I think I stopped the Sword of Truth Series somewhere into the second or third book. After all the recomendations, I may have to put it back on my reading list.
Someone recently recommended the Eragon series to me. Does anyone have any opinions on it?

On the eragon series, I actually enjoyed the books very much! Don't watch the movie or you will lose 2 hrs of your life that is non retrievable!
Song of Ice and Fire is great!
Wheel of Time series I would recommend not to start and stop, that is currently the series I'm on. Book 5.

I haven't read the Soldier's Son series, but for re-reading, I would only hit the first trilogy of the Farseer series, not the second.

I really liked Eragon, but the second book to some extent and particularly the third lacked strong conflict. It never really feels like there is a possibility for failure for the protagonist, and when the ending's assured there's little to keep you engaged in the book. They aren't BAD per se, there's just a lot of better stuff out there.

Ok finally got the consolidated list started. It's in rough shape as I still have some formatting to apply as well as reorganize the list to alphabetically by author. But it's a start! I'm really enjoying seeing the discussion and lists of what we all read and am amazed (seriously!) to see that we share interest in the same authors/series.
Edit: Alphabetized; removed a couple of duplicate entries; fixed some formatting errors.
